This dinnerplate dahlia is currently the leading lady of the dahlia world–soft and lush like a peony but preserving the visual interest of the dahlia. The color of Cafe au Lait is actually much more interesting than coffee with milk would lead you to expect, ranging from lavender to light pink to buff. I have found that cooler temperatures bring the lighter coloration that is so coveted. It is later-blooming so I plant these tubers first. Plants are 4-5 ft tall and the harder you harvest the more blooms and buds grow.

Care Instructions

Dahlias love sun. Place root on its side about 6″ inches deep in loose soil that is well drained. If you have gravely or very sandy soil you might want to mix in some compost with the sandy soil. Allow for 12″ spacing between plants. Use 5-10-10 fertilizer a few times after the plant is a foot tall. Water once weekly. Remove dead head flowers to encourage blooming. Blooms from August until frost.

Bulbs need to be dug up for the winter. Store in a dry, dark 40-45 degree location.
